it’s in the air

Tags: , ,

We are perpetually haunted by the question of re-inventing the body, of what it can
do, or what it is capable of. Mette Ingvartsen (PhD candidate of Konstnärliga forskarskolan) and Jefta van Dinther give the question
a more modest, and yet finer re-tuning: how can we perceive the body as body, and
movement insofar as it is only movement? It’s in the Air unravels the body in the
nexus between the human-cultural and the natural-physical, between will, effort and
desire and mechanical laws and conditions. Performance at Media Centre Lume in Helsinki November 30 and 31, 6 pm,  part of Moving in November. (photo © Peter Lenaerts)

research in the arts spring 2011

Tags: , , ,

The course Research in the arts (7,5 hp) is devoted to artistic research, or research in the arts, using as its main material the new anthology, The Routledge Companion to Research in the Arts. The book, the first of it’s kind, deals with a multitude of aspects of artistic research: general and discipline-specific; philosophical, political and practical. The course will provide insights into the ongoing discussion on the nature, importance and position of artistic research within and outside academia.
The course will take place in spring 2011. There will be five sessions (all Thursdays): January 27 (double session), February 24, March 24, April 28, May 26.
All of the 23 chapters will be studied and discussed. Following each session, the participants will write reflections on the chapters discussed. These reflections will be followed up in the following session.
The course will be taught mainly by the Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University in Gothenburg Henk Borgdorff, himself a co-author of the book. Other contributors to the book will participate in some of the sessions. The course is open to all doctoral candidates of the faculty (as well as to the candidates enrolled in Konstnärliga forskarskolan as far as the number of participants allows)  but it is especially recommended to first-year doctoral students. The maximum number of participants is 15. Course leader: Professor Sverker Jullander (sverker.jullander@konst.gu.se).
If you wish to enrol for this course, please send an email of interest to: anna.frisk@konst.gu.se, no later than December 15!

circus on the couch

Tags: ,

Friday October 29 2010 at the University of Dance and Circus 14-16 pm and 19-21 pm John-Paul Zaccarini  will explain the conjunction of Circus and Psychoanalysis which is the methodology he began exploring at DHS in 2007 as Visiting Professor. It briefly covers dream analysis, the symptom and the possibility of circus pathology using examples from masochism and sadism. It exposes not only the theory but also some of the methodology employed in arriving at new theories of where, psychically, Circus may come from and what it might mean to be “cured” of it. As such, it is a conversation between the circus artist and the academic/analyst.

modul

Tags: , , ,

The research seminar the 26th of October at 2-4 pm, Studio D, at the University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm will evolve through a discussion between coreographer and PhDcandidate Rasmus Ölme and his supervisor Amanda Steggell around the topic of the serial performance format MODUL. MODUL is the practical part of Rasmus research, and so far there has been three of them presented (Modul ≠1, Modul ≠ 2, Modul ≠3, the fourth is forthcoming (Modul ≠4) Key questions are:

  • How has the academic context changed the artistic process and the mode of production?
  • What part does science play in artistic research?
  • How can MODUL be placed in a historic context?
  • How does MODUL relate to the work as a teacher?
  • What modules are to be found inside the presented MODULs and how (if at all) have they developed/changed between the different presentations?
  • What is the MODUL method?

art in custody

Tags: , , , ,

As a result of a collaboration between the art faculties at the universities in Lund and Gothenburg the conference ”Art in custody” will be held in Malmö at the Inter Arts Centre the 10-11 of November 2010.
Increasingly evaluation of research, coupled to distribution of resources, is made partly or wholly by numerical accounts and citation index of publications in databases and peer-reviewed open access journals.  In this system artistic work and artistic research is running the risk of being made invisible: so what is a productive and proactive stance? Does artistic research, for the sake of it’s own development, have a need for formalising and adopting the already existing forms for peer-review and discussion in the art-worlds?
The conference is open for administrators, librarians and funders in the area of artistic research and development.
