call for papers on artistic research in music

Tags: , ,

Part of the 2013 issue of Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning (Swedish Journal of Musicology, STM) will be devoted to the subject of artistic research in music. We encourage submissions on aspects of the theories, methods, significance, possibilities, challenges etc. of this branch of music research. Suitable topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • What characterizes, or should characterize, artistic research in music in relation to other kinds of music research?
  • What important phenomena/issues has artistic research in music yet to deal with, and how could this be accomplished?
  • How can artistic research in music develop and communicate artistic knowledge?
  • How can artistic research in music be combined with other kinds of music research?
  • ”Interpretation” is part of the practice of musicians as well as of musicologists. What are the similarities and differences between these kinds of interpretation? Can they be combined in a fruitful way?
  • What challenges does artistic research in music face?
  • How can universities take advantage of the competence of researching musicians?
  • How can the results of artistic research in music be implemented within musical life?

limit cruisers

Tags: , , ,

Limit cruisers is a three-part performance for listeners and onlookers by visual artist Janna Holmstedt, that can be experienced between 18-20 of September at the Inter Arts Center in Malmö, with three performances each day: 19, 19.45 and 20.30- Three visistors at the time will each be entering a sphere of their own. A countdown begins. A voice communicated to them via the wireless headphones they all will be wearing informs them that the oxygene will last another ten minutes. Meanwhile other visitors can watch the three isolated persons – who after a while will start moving and interacting. Limit cruisers is a part of Janna Holmstedts doctoral project at the Umeå Art Academy.  The three parts of the piece are called ”New Individualism”, ”The Heroes of Absolute Zero” and ”Decoy” and are all centered around more or less successful attempts to reach ground zero, a clearly distinguishable border or the so strongly desired state of individual autonomy.  The performance is produced together with Teatr Weimar, with support from Umeå Art Academy

In the artist talk, between 16-18 pm in one of the seminar rooms of Inter Arts Center (third floor) Janna will talk about her work with fictionalized situations, oral understanding in a culture of writing, memory theatres, exformation, the non-existent audiences and communication models of no use. Invited partners in the conversation are Per Nilsson, philosopher at the Umeå Art Academy and Jörgen Dahlqvist at Teatr Weimar. The seminar will be held in Swedish.

income and come out

Tags: , , , ,

Sunday 16 September Goldin+Senneby
are organizing the symposium Income and Come Out with Something You Should Know (FR) , Agency (BE), Laurence Duchêne (FR) and Christine Gerrard (UK) . The symposium takes place at Drottningholms Slottsteater 13-18 pm, and tickets are bought through Ticnet.
As an arts symposium it will plug itself on the theater of economy.  While the market of performance, instead of goods, has become an objective for transforming the production-based model, the global economy has grasped the performative through advocating connectivity, theatricality, youthfulness, speed, branding, imaging and imagination, and drafting an army of characters into performing who and what counts in the knowledge economy.
Goldin+Senneby has performed these meta-narratives by coupling dramatic production as conceptual framing to “imaginary tactics such as speculation, utopia, magic and theatre.” These tactics including theatricality, narrativity and « trickality » will be expanded to the words and the works of : Agency, a Brussels based artist initiative by Kobe Matthys, which collects and mobilises collective debate on cultural objects or acts derived from lawsuits or controversies around their intellectual property; Laurence Duchêne, activist and economist, co-author of  L’Abstraction Matérielle. L’argent au delà de la morale et de l’économie which calls into play the oxymoron of Material Abstraction, Christine Gerrard, Lecturer in English Literature at Oxford, focused on the financial revolution of the 1690′s in its relation to language and literature, and  Something you should know : artists and producers today an ongoing seminar conceptualised and organized since 2006 by Patricia Falguières, Elisabeth Lebovici, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Natasa Petresin-Bachelez within the framework of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, France.
