February 5-6 2013 Konstnärliga forskarskolan is organizing a workshop with Marie-Luise Angerer (1hp)

February 5: 17:00-19:00 at Konstfack (Introduction lecture)
February 6: 10:00-16:00 at Konstfack (only 12 participants)

When Judith Butler’s Bodies that Matter was published in the early 90s the discussion if everything is text or not everything is text (discourse) entered a new phase. From today’s perspective this discussion was the last time that text, discourse, structures were understood as the main level to “see“ the world. Briefly after these years, already in the midst 90s, the performative and a only a few years later the affective turn introduced the material, corporeal, the things and objects as new agencies of worlding.
The seminar will analyse these shifts and their impact on questions such as the subject, art as material practice, media technology as elementary. Download curriculum here.
Please note your interest to Emma Kihl.

Seminar with Smári McCarthy (1hp). On 17-18 January 2013, Ana Džokić and Marc Neelen (STEALTH.unlimited) are organising a seminar with Smari McCarthy (Reykjavík).  The seminar is made in a collaboration between The Royal Institute of Art/Mejan Arc and Konstnärliga forskarskolan.
Smári McCarthy (see also wikipedia) is a Reykjavík based information activist, writer, hacker and free software developer and freedom fighter – to name of few of his trades. He is executive director at the International Modern Media Institute (IMMI) and co-founder of the Icelandic Digital Freedoms Society, in which role he co-drafted the legislative framework to support investigative journalism and independence of online media in Iceland. Smári co-founded the Constitutional Analysis Support Project (CAST), an NGO support group using a variety of textual and semantic analysis techniques aimed at building Iceland’s new constitution. He is actively engaged in crowdsourcing democracy in an attempt to make it more – or even radically – democratic, as with his proposal for the Shadow Parliament Project, and the Shadow City which made it to a working democratic tool for the city of Reykjavík; both participatory backdrops for major political changes on Iceland in recent years. While being, as he admits “dangerously overemployed” and according to others gifted with a “very short attention span”, his frantic activities leave a remarkable trace of initiatives, involvements and imprints in society.
In this two-days seminar, which will take place at The Royal Institute of Art, Smári will take us on an exploration into the role of language and of crowdsourcing for democratic processes. The first day will be hosted in the framework of the post-master course “In Search of Common Ground” of RESOURCES.12/LAB at Mejan Arc/The Royal Institute of Art. The second day will be hosted by Konstnärliga forskarskolan.
