Call for presentations

Within the conference series CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, the Circus Department at the School of Dance and Circus, part of Stockholm University of the Arts (Uniarts), Sweden, invites you to send proposals for the second conference of Circus Arts Research and Development.

CARD2– Circus Arts Research Development – Circus on the Edge

A conference with lectures, workshops, performances, films and interventions in Stockholm, Sweden, December 9th to 11th 2015

Purpose

The purpose of the conference is to create a meeting place for international researchers to introduce and share their research, to discuss, demonstrate and provoke, to agree and find collaborators, critical allies and opponents. Furthermore, to illuminate how circus practice has developed and how the field of artistic research differs from research for production.

Background

The first CARD was launched by the University of Dance and Circus as a part of the work to demystify artistic research in circus. Since then the first artistic PhD in circus has been awarded, another is underway, post-doctoral research has commenced and ongoing artistic research is producing new knowledge and opening up new critical vistas for the form. In tandem to this development, the will to reassess, research and develop circus practice in the professional sector has grown. There is a recognized need to exchange ideas within the field of circus in order to promote the research basis for circus.

The conference will be held in English. Up to date information will be posted here.

CARPA4

Tags: , , ,

The Performing Arts Research Centre (Tutke) at the Theatre Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki welcomes artistic researchers at doctoral and post-doctoral levels to take part in the fourth biannual colloquium on artistic research in performing arts:

The Non-Human and the Inhuman in Performing Arts: Bodies, Organisms and Objects in Conflict

11th – 13th of June 2015

CARPA4 reflects on performing practices from the point of view of their non-human factors. We ask:

  • Whether performance is no longer considered a typically human behavior, expressing and reflecting the intentions and needs of human beings, but rather a point of encounter and a collaborative relation between heterogeneous elements, components or materials, like bodies, organisms and objects.
  • How can human performers find their place within performative arrangements, where the logic no longer serves human purposes?
  • What to do with bodies that no longer are “mine” or “living”?
  • In which ways can different life forms in their wide diversity enter the scene of performing arts and deconstruct this scene?
  • What kind of objects does a performance consist of? How can a performance create, liberate, or reunite objects, beyond “object theatre”?
  • How is the question of the inhuman defined and resolved in each case?

The colloquium approaches its topic area without specific disciplinary framings, collaboratively, and performatively, in an attempt to support the fruitful meeting of various points of view. It seeks common points of contact, resonating surfaces, and rhythmic interference between its heterogeneous but constituent parts.

Events will be held at Theatre Academy Helsinki, Finland
