The objective for the exhibition is to investigate the individual protest as a phenomenon in relationship to collective political struggle. In focus stands a standardized box in which anybody is invited to perform an individual protest by engaging in a hunger strike.
The box is a sculpture inspired by a true story from 1982 when a taxi driver and small business owner from Tornedalen named Folke Pudas spent a winter in a box performing a political protest by a hunger strike at Sergels Torg. (A central square in Stockholm.)
In 1982, the local authorities denied Folke Pudas the license to organize a local bus route and revoked his permission to make business. Folke Pudas decided to fight. Instead of giving up, Folke Pudas transformed a local controversy with the authorities into a nationwide political issue. “The Pudas Box” became a new word in the Swedish political vocabulary. Folke Pudas finally won his case by taking it to the European Court of human rights. During the exhibition, it will be possible to book a time in the box for a hunger strike.
