Course description
The course aims to discuss documentation within experimental film and functions of language. The course will provide a space to experience, understand and talk about this as well as to discuss important lines of thinking and doing in the contemporary moving image practice of visual artists. The course will be taught in English and finishes with an individually written portfolio assignment.

The course consists in a combined event of screening and discussion. The course focuses mainly on the films by Gunvor Nelsons, presenting her key work My Name is Oona, 1969, 10 min, Time Being, 1991, 6 min, Red Shift, 1984, 50 min. But also present the short film Enligt lag, 1957, 20 min by Peter Weiss (from his time in Sweden) and Brev ur tystnaden, 1989, 40 min by Claes Söderquist. The common themes in these films are their relentless belief in the moving image as language.

The course also provides a chance to be introduced to the oldest existing organization in Sweden devoted to the promotion, preservation and distribution of film and video art. The Filmform collection includes titles dating from 1924 until today. The Reference Archive is available for research at Filmform and contains about 4 000 titles. Anna-Karin, filmforms director and producer will be leading the course.

Gunvor Nelson was one of the central figures in the avant-garde film movement that emerged in the Bay Area in the 60s. Nelson illuminates elusive and intimate subjects as childhood, aging, displacement, memory, women’s roles, death, and the symbolic forces of nature and water via exploration of sound and moving image. Her ephemeral, dreamlike images are simultaneously tactile and almost tangible, while her imaginative use of language and traces of music add considerably to the emotional impact of her works. Filmic collage and dynamic editing create tension and contrast. The unique characteristics of Nelson’s works form less a definable style than a sustained aesthetic.

Gunnel Pettersson, a senior lecturer in film at Malmö University College and previously she was deputy head of the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm where she also taught for many years.
