symposium: in the blend

Tags: , , , ,

Where: Inter Arts Center, Bergsg. 29, Malmö
When: April 22-25

Susan Sontag’s famous essay Against Interpretation serves as a point of departure in the artistic research stranderfrontproject Ögonblickets Anatomi (Loosly: The Anatomy of the Moment) led by Teatr Weimar and the Theatre Academy in Malmö. The focus is put on the artistic work as a carrier of its own terminology and its own discourse. The title of the symposium, In the Blend, has been taken from the book by Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner where the authors are constructing the term conceptual blending to denote the integration of meaning and terminology in order to create new meanings and new outlooks. The symposium is about thinking in art and includes artistic works, seminars, presentations and discussions.

In the Blend and Ögonblickets Anatomi are financed by the Swedish Research Council
Ögonblickets Anatomi is a collaboration between Teaterhögskolan i Malmö, Inter Arts Center, Teatr Weimar andwlabs.

A performance for listeners and observers in two acts

by Janna Holmstedt
The artist Janna Holmstedt presents her performance Limit-Cruisers for 6 participants at Weld, Stockholm, 21-23 February.  In Janna Holmstedt’s work there is no privileged position or full view. There is no audience and no actors. There isn’t even any artwork unless you activate it and set it in motion. As a visitor, you are invited to explore the experience of being situated and responsive, where exformation is called into play and normality is questioned. You don’t need to perform, only engage.

Limit-Cruisers is the first of a series of performances that are included in the artist Janna Holmstedt’s research project ”What You See is not What You Get”. Different versions of Limit-Cruisers have been performed at Inter Arts Center in Malmö, and at Performance Studies international Conference #19, Stanford University, California.

limit cruisers

Limit cruisers is a three-part performance for listeners and onlookers by visual artist Janna Holmstedt, that can be experienced between 18-20 of September at the Inter Arts Center in Malmö, with three performances each day: 19, 19.45 and 20.30- Three visistors at the time will each be entering a sphere of their own. A countdown begins. A voice communicated to them via the wireless headphones they all will be wearing informs them that the oxygene will last another ten minutes. Meanwhile other visitors can watch the three isolated persons – who after a while will start moving and interacting. Limit cruisers is a part of Janna Holmstedts doctoral project at the Umeå Art Academy.  The three parts of the piece are called ”New Individualism”, ”The Heroes of Absolute Zero” and ”Decoy” and are all centered around more or less successful attempts to reach ground zero, a clearly distinguishable border or the so strongly desired state of individual autonomy.  The performance is produced together with Teatr Weimar, with support from Umeå Art Academy

Invited partners in the conversation are Per Nilsson, philosopher at the Umeå Art Academy and Jörgen Dahlqvist at Teatr Weimar. The seminar will be held in Swedish.
