lisa tan: a nonspatial continuum

Tags:

A nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future Lisa Tan

The current group show at SCHLEICHER/LANGE (15/11 – 21/12) in Berlin includes Letters from Dr. Bamberger by Lisa Tan in addition to works by Toril Johannessen, ElizabethMcAlpine, Evariste Richer and Laurent Montaron in an eclectic and non-representative investigation of Time. All of the exhibited works from the five artists participating in this show refer to time in a dierent way and investigate possibilities for an alternative approach, not just to time as a theme but also to how it can be measured. They give rise to various questions, all of them taking an angle on the underlying theme: How is it possible to represent time? Is it possible at all?

Opening: Friday 6 September, 5pm
Seminar: Saturday 7 September, 11am

Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy? intends to establish an aesthetic, intellectual, and political position by bringing the public and those shaping contemporary art discourse closer to a heightened and sensitive understanding of the conditions that shape our consciousness and existence today. LIAF 2013 will feature a balanced variety of art projects that create connections with each other and their surroundings, forming a circuit of intense emotions, ideas, and positions.

April 19 2013 Konstnärliga forskarskolan is organizing a screening/seminar with Mike Sperlinger & Lisa Tan (1hp)

April 19: 11:00-17:00 at Bio Rio, Hornstulls strand 3, Stockholm.

The workshop consists of a combined event of screening and discussion, where Lisa Tan will show her work Sunsets (2012) as well as her forthcoming work Notes from Underground (provisional title) and Duncan Campbells Bernadette also will be screened. The seminar will support a discussion around withdrawal and its possibilities, and will address a certain drive towards transcending subjectivity and language through participation and self-reflexivity. The screening/seminar takes place at Bio Rio in Stockholm April 19, and is limited to 18 participants.

Lisa Tan is a PhD candidate in Fine Art at the University of Gothenburg, Valand Academy.  She is making a trilogy of video works where the intersection of private and professional life, reaction to what might be called threshold experiences, and pondering the affective qualities of natural phenomena amidst the mundane– all figure prominently in the making of the work.  Her research is generally preoccupied with the linguistic handling of experience and the video work is subtly aided by literary figures such as Clarice Lispector and Susan Sontag, whose respective enigmatic presence gives way to a discussion on creative labor and ways of being.

Mike Sperlinger is the assistant director of LUX, the institution in London that holds the largest collection of artists’ film and video.  His criticism and articles have appeared in AfterallDotDotDot,FriezeTexte zur Kunst.  He’s written catalogue essays: ”Terms of Use” (curated by Lisa Rosendahl, Montehermoso), ”Keith Arnatt”(Henry Moore Institute), ”If You Say Something, See Something” (Piet Zwart student catalogue, Rotterdam, 2010), and a forthcoming ‘interactive fiction’ project with Ed Atkins.  He has co-edited FR David with artist/designer Will Holder and published by de Appel, Amsterdam.  He co-curated a Marianne Wex exhibition at Badischer Kunstverein (2012): ‘Female’ and ‘Male’ Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures“, the first major exhibition of Wex’s work in Germany since the 1970s.
